Happy Hanukkah to everyone who celebrates! Have you ever wondered why this Jewish holiday, also known as the Festival of Lights, is spelled in so many ways? Unlike translation, it comes down to transliteration. Hanukkah and Chanukah are the two versions that are most widely used and accepted. No matter how you spell it, Hanukkah started last Sunday and lasts for eight days.

A Message from the DEI Committee

National Native American Heritage Day (November 26th), recognized the day after Thanksgiving, honors the American indigenous population.  This day celebrates the vibrant cultures, traditions and heritages while recognizing the many contributions Native Americans have made to our nation.

Mrs. LaBarr, our favorite librarian, shares this read-aloud The Legend of the Cape May Diamond by Trinka Hakes Noble and illustrated by E.B. Lewis, to acknowledge this day.  Please share with your children and learn about the Native American history that is so close to home.  The next time you head to Cape May, you will know more about these precious stones that you find on the beach.

Mrs. LaBarr also read, Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story by Kevin Noble Maillard and illustrated by Juana Marinez-Neal to our 5th graders. Fry bread is a flatbread that is fried in oil, shortening or lard. Several tribes have their own variation of fry bread. Carina Guerrero shares Maillard's recipe https://www.wevideo.com/view/2460161334

Fun Fact:
Merriam-Webster added 455 new words to the dictionary last month. Now, it includes abbreviations like TBH (to be honest) and FTW (for the win). It also includes pandemic-related terms like long COVID and super spreader. Merriam-Webster says language never stops evolving, so the dictionary never stops expanding. This latest list brings together new and familiar words that have established themselves in everyday life.

Important Message from Nurse Horton:

Please send your child to school with an extra mask in their backpack. Their mask should fit properly to their face. It cannot hang loose off their nose or down by the chin. A loose fitting mask is an added distraction. It is also advised to have a lanyard to keep the mask on during outdoor mask breaks so the mask doesn't fall on the ground or get lost. We have a small amount of masks on hand here - but we are going through them at a very quick pace. Thank you for your cooperation.

Message from the DEI Committee:

In honor of Latin America’s most popular holiday, the DEI committee is featuring a second Storywalk® this month.  El Dia de los Muertos - The Day of the Dead, A Bilingual Celebration by Bob Barner, translated by Teresa Mlawer.

The story will be displayed on the playground, near the swings, be sure to check it out during Fun Day this Friday.

“ Follow two children as they celebrate their ancestors on this vibrant holiday.  They offer flowers, sugar skulls, and special bread, and make delicious foods.  By spreading marigold petals, they guide the dead home to join the festivities.  Lush collage and lyrical text in both English and Spanish create the perfect introduction to this festival.”

October 5, 2021

The word of the month is COURAGE. Courage, among other things, is the choice and willingness to confront uncertainty. If we learned anything in 2020 it’s that we are never certain what the future holds. At Orchard, the students and teachers continue to show their courage on a daily basis by showing up strong every day!

Tomorrow our 3-5 grade students will learn all about courage and overcoming adversity when guest speaker Kelsey Tainsh visits Orchard. 27 year-old stroke survivor Kelsey Tainsh will remind you that your worst day is often better than most people's best day. Armed with her quirky sense of humor, engaging stories and relevant message, Kelsey helps youth gain the perspective needed to overcome any challenge.
