May 4, 2021

In
May 1990, President Bush proclaimed the month of May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. At Orchard school we are also recognizing the contribution and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans. Every day this month during our morning announcements, we are featuring an important person who has made or is making a difference. You can follow along here to learn about our “person of the day”. Ask your children over dinner - what important Asian American person they learned about today in school.

Speaking of dinner topic discussions...today grades 3-5 enjoyed an amazing virtual visit from author Ruby Bridges. It was a fascinating presentation and the children asked informative questions which the author answered personally. Thank you to the Orchard HSA for making this phenomenal learning experience possible! Also, a special thank you to Mrs. LaBarr for organizing this unique event.

Notes from the Health Office:

Allergies vs. COVID… If your child complains of any allergy-type symptoms, we cannot assume it is allergies….they will need to be checked by the doctor and given a COVID test. We have had a number of “allergies” that were actually positive Covid cases in the district. We appreciate your cooperation with this as we continue to do our best to keep everyone safe! This Infographic helps explain the overlap of COVID-19 symptoms with seasonal allergy symptoms.

Fifth Grade Parents:  Please read this letter regarding necessary 6th Grade Immunizations.

REMINDER:
Tennis Court Lot Closure

Beginning today, the Bellair Tennis Court entrance to Orchard School will be closed.  The Village is installing a new sidewalk to connect the Orchard path to the tennis court parking lot. While they complete this project, we will not have access to and from the tennis court lot.

Families who utilize this entrance/parking lot should make alternative plans for arrival and dismissal until further notice.

First grade students will enter through the main entrance (along with the 5th graders). First graders will still be dismissed out of their typical exit - so please be mindful of the construction  and arrive at the back of the school via the playground side.

April 20, 2021
“A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it, it just blooms.”

Last April we were just beginning what we thought would be a short break. Yesterday we entered into phase two of re-opening with both cohorts here. What a great day!  It’s like the first week of school all over again. One day at a time - #Orchardstrong together!

Grades 4&5 Chromebook Announcement:

All students in 4th and 5th grades will be receiving a new chromebook on Wednesday, April 21. Please be sure your child brings their chromebook to school along with the charging cord to trade in for the new one tomorrow. The new upgraded chromebooks will stay with your child through eight grade.

We will only distribute the new chromebook once we have traded with the old chromebook and charger, so please remember to pack those for school on Wednesday, 4/21. Thank you!

Watch here as our very own, talented Music Teacher, Mr. Kreismer, dazzles and delights  in a one man concert that was recorded for the Princeton University Chapel, “Noontime Concert Series” at St. John’s Church in Ramsey. This beautiful performance is a must see!

Note from the Superintendent’s Office: As a reminder, we will not make an announcement regarding the snow/emergency days until May. School will be in session during the days identified on the calendar in May until further notification.

April 19 Transition Updates

We are so excited to welcome back our 2-5 students for 5 days a week of in-person learning! A few notes:

  • Drop off will remain rolling with entrance permitted beginning at 8:20 AM
  • Students will have virtual afternoon classes, including a 30 minute virtual special and assigned meets with homeroom teachers
  • All student afternoon sessions will begin at 1:30pm to allow for pickup and lunch at home
  • Most basic skills sessions have been converted to in-person instruction instead of virtual, though some exceptions remain
  • Homeroom teachers will share their new schedules with families and students this week to prepare for Monday.

PLEASE NOTE: Afternoon meets will be canceled this week for grades 2-5 to allow time to prep for the transition.

Our kind and generous HSA is offering the second half of our support and administrative staff a night off from cooking! We are all so grateful and appreciative. Please read this message from the HSA president and see what’s on the menu here.

TEACHERS AND PARENTS NO COOK NIGHT #4 (FINAL ONE)

The sun is shining, the flowers are budding, spring has arrived. And while being outside is more inviting these days, there are still those pesky dishes to deal with when you return home. Take a night off and help Orchard's amazing Administrative and Support staff do the same on Thursday April 15th. For the final time this school year, the Orchard HSA has partnered with Park Wood Deli for the last of four No Cook Nights!

Our final No Cook Night will be supporting the second half of our Support and Administrative staff. To purchase or even partially contribute to a dinner for a teacher in these grades, or to simply take a night off of cooking yourself, call Park Wood Deli at (201) 689-0855, and mention “Orchard School." All Orders MUST be placed by Thursday April 15th at 10:00 AM. Orders are to be picked up at Park Wood. We recommend you enjoy the meal and then eat dessert while you tune into that night's HSA meeting at 8 PM.

Please join in to the monthly HSA Meeting at 8 PM. Agenda to follow shortly! Mrs. Ferreri will certainly be updating on the 4.19 transition. Click on the Zoom link below:

April 6, 2021

Welcome Back! We hope everyone had a restful week off. We have a busy week ahead of us and lots of exciting things to look forward to.

This Wednesday April 7th at 7pm log on for a special edition of Orchard@Home.

Some Orchard Teachers (perhaps even yours?) and Mrs. Ferreri are participating in a virtual Orchard Family Feud for all of our enjoyment!

Just like the TV version of Family Feud, the answers will be tallied using super secret surveys we've surreptitiously sent out to the Orchard 5th graders! The teachers have NO idea what categories await them so we have a true "Survey Says" for the teachers to guess.

Use this Zoom link on Wednesday, April 7th at 7pm!   (https://ridgewood-k12-nj-ua.zoom.us/j/3792923913?pwd=UUlxMTVDeFJseXNSZCtnZmJSVTg3Zz09#success)

Can't wait to see you at the Feud!

On Thursday, May 6th, Orchard 3rd-5th graders will be welcoming Ruby Bridges for a special virtual author visit! Ruby Bridges became one of the first black children to integrate into an all white public school system in 1960. She has written two children’s books that are available for purchase along with another book written by Robert Coles about her inspirational true story.

This Book Order Form is due back by Friday, April 9th. If you have any questions, please contact Jenna Hammond at jennamhammond@gmail.com.

Another way to make lemonade out of lemons is to celebrate favorite traditions for a whole week instead of just one night! Here is a list of great ideas from the HSA for a fun-filled International Week!

Please be aware, our students are now using the playgrounds during the school day. We play within our homeroom cohort and follow safety protocols. Playgrounds are closed during school hours (8:40 - 12:45). If you are playing on the playground after school, we ask that you play smart!

  • Masks are required
  • Do not congregate in large groups or high traffic areas
  • Sanitize hands before and after using the equipment

Are you traveling for Spring Break? If so, have you informed the school nurse?
Any families traveling over break
must communicate with our school nurse, Mrs. Horton regarding dates of travel and plans for return.

Below are the updated travel guidelines while we are in the orange/high COVID Risk Category.

New Jersey strongly discourages all non-essential interstate travel at this time.
Travelers and residents returning from any U.S. state or territory beyond the immediate region (New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware) for more than 24 hours must self-quarantine. All travelers, regardless of vaccination status, should get tested 3–5 days after travel and stay home and self-quarantine for 7 days after travel, even if their test is negative. Travelers who don’t get tested should stay home and self-quarantine for 10 days after travel. Travelers who test positive or develop symptoms of COVID-19 should isolate and follow public health recommendations. Please contact Nurse Horton to share the date of return to NJ and navigate through the next steps to safely complete the required quarantine. International travel requires a 14-day quarantine upon return.

Spring is in the air! The season of new beginnings, fresh blooms and when the earth seems to come to life again. We share that renewed sense of spring energy here at Orchard!

We are so happy to welcome back our kindergarten and first grade students everyday starting next Monday.
With this new schedule, there will be no afternoon SEL sessions with specialists for grades K-5 beginning March 22nd.

During the school day, we are now using the playgrounds with our students. We play within our homeroom cohort and follow protocols. Please be aware that our playgrounds are closed during school hours (8:40 - 12:45). If you are playing on the playground after school, we ask that you play smart! Masks are required. Avoid congregating or high traffic areas and sanitize hands before and after using equipment.

Any families traveling over break must communicate with our school nurse, Mrs. Horton regarding dates of travel and plans for return.

Below are the updated travel guidelines while we are in the orange/high COVID Risk Category:

  • New Jersey strongly discourages all non-essential interstate travel at this time.
  • Travelers and residents returning from any U.S. state or territory beyond the immediate region (New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware) for more than 24 hours must self-quarantine.
  • All travelers, regardless of vaccination status, should get tested 3–5 days after travel and stay home and self-quarantine for 7 days after travel, even if their test is negative.
  • Travelers who don’t get tested should stay home and self-quarantine for 10 days after travel.
  • Travelers who test positive or develop symptoms of COVID-19 should isolate and follow public health recommendations.
  • Please contact Nurse Horton to share the date of return to NJ and navigate through the next steps to safely complete the required quarantine.
